For my summer break in 2020 I flew to Fukuoka planning to roam around Kyushu region in Southern Japan. Fukuoka is one of the largest cities in Kyushu region.

After arriving at the airport at night I went to Montana Hostel-Hakata which is quite close to the airport and city. I recommend this accommodation for any budget traveler for the price and location. The accommodation also has quite stylish interior facilitating bicycle rental, open kitchen space and laundry facilities.

Next day morning I head to explore the city area. First I went to Jotenji temple hoping to check the sand garden. Unfortunately the temple is closed to the public but I had a chance to see the sand garden from outside the gate. After roaming around the temple premises I found that this place claims to be the birthplace of Japanese udon, soba and Manju.

After exploring Jotenji I cycled around the city exploring more temples and city iconic buildings nearby. When I was cycling around I passed by a city market area. I have to walk around the market area as cycling is prohibited. I found these beautiful summer festival decorations hanging from the ceiling. These decorations for summer festivals are called Tanabata festival which is also called star festival. This colorful festival is celebrated in early July and August. The lanterns are decorated with colorful papers that were hand written wishes in the hope that the wishes become true. It was quite special to see in Fukuoka.

At the end of the day I explored Canal city shopping center and had dinner at Wired cafe near the station. I really love the interior of the cafe, especially the furniture arrangement and types.

Overall, Fukuoka city is a beautiful city to explore but I realized I spent too much time there. In my opinion 24 hours is enough to explore the city as there are not many ideal destinations to explore around. I missed one place to travel which is Momochi seaside park as I saw beautiful photographs from other travelers who have been there.
